About Adopt A Classroom
After travelling to Uganda in 2006 and seeing the great need in the schools AACofWA was born. Adopt a Classroom pairs classes in the US with classes in Uganda.
Conditions in the classroom
The conditions in the classroom are very basic. Many times with mud floors and walls, dust and critters abound with little or no school supplies. Our team found the teachers sharing one book per class or sometimes none. They would write entire lessons on the chalk board / wall or even re-draw pictures from the book onto poster paper to use for the whole class.
How it works
The US classes watch video footage and see pictures of Uganda and learn about their culture. The students begin fundraising however they choose with a goal of $500.00 for every class they wish to adopt. Fundraisers provide the money needed that is wired to Uganda to purchase school materials locally. The school director then delivers the supplies to the adopted class taking pictures and often video to be presented to the US students at a future date. When available a Ugandan will visit the classes in the US and explain how much of an impact their gifts have made and to answer any questions the students have. As of 2011 students can now sponsor a family with a goat for $50. Goats are easy to care for generally very clean and will give the family of the student a better future.
