Frequently Asked Questions

Q: [How does it work]
A:

Thank you for expressing interest in the Adopt a Classroom program.  Adopt a Classroom is designed to encourage U.S. elementary and middle-school age students to support their peers in Uganda, East Africa, by raising money to purchase much needed school supplies for a class. If you participate, your class or group of classes will select a grade to adopt. You can raise money any way you can imagine; we suggest something simple like a coin/dollar drive. Some classes have done raffles, chores at home, bake sales, etc. Your class will receive pictures of their adopted class receiving the supplies so they can see the direct affect their efforts have in their peers’ lives.

Q: [How will it enhance my learning program]
A:

AAC program can be incorporated into your existing teaching schedule. If you study diversity, math, geography, Africa, world history, letter writing, etc., this program can be creatively worked in!

Q: [Why is this important]
A:

These are truly needy children. Few people in these rural areas can afford school supplies or pay school fees. Teachers may have one book per subject. They copy the lessons down on the chalk board, or if they have some paper, they may copy it on paper and hang it on the wall. Whole tests are also written on the chalkboard. This program has been developed to fund supplies expressly for these classrooms and students to use on a daily basis. This also teaches American children to be thankful for and appreciate the abundance of study that we have in our country.

Q: [How much money do we have to raise]
A:

We recommend setting a fundraising goal of $500. We understand this can be tough for some classes but most have exceeded this amount and some have ended up adopting 3 or even 4 classes. This amount allows each child to receive supplies and the teachers too! We encourage multiple classes to work together as well.

Q: [What about next year]
A:

Our hope is you will find this program so successful that you will consider repeating the fundraiser each year. This is a unique opportunity to support Ugandan teachers and for your successive classes to benefit together.

Q: [What happens to the money]
A:

Checks are payable to Adopt a Class. The non profit tax ID # is 20-0505188 100% of the money is used for Uganda. A small portion of the money is used for the cost of delivery and that amount depends upon how far away the school is from the capital city of Kampala.
